Traversing the African veld in the company of these majestic giants is a rare privilege indeed. With ears flapping noisily, trunks swinging and the soft padding of huge feet this is an incredible experience. Following a carefully planned route through the reserve, gently amble across the bush getting closer to wildlife than is usual. Antelope, zebra and wildebeest will continue to graze unconcerned by the proximity of the elephants with their human companions atop.
Our first two elephants Modjadji and Tswale are originally from an elephant orphanage in Limpopo Province and have been resettled at Kwa Madwala. Both are orphaned elephants and as such are already domesticated. They require huge amounts of TLC along with plenty of food and water, all of which is amply supplied by our dedicated team of rangers, elephant grooms and even gap year participants!
Modjadji (meaning Queen) is 19 years old and close to
maturity. She weighs in at an impressive 3 tonnes and is the
older and more dominant of the two. At mud bathing time Modjadji
is first to bath! She is missing one tusk which she lost when
hitting a tree sometime ago.
Tsalwe (a mountain range near his original home) is the younger of the two at 13 years old. At 2.5 tonnes he still has a lot of growing to do before he reaches his peak adult weight of around 5-6 tonnes and 3.6m tall at the shoulder. He is very loving and people friendly.
Working closely with renowned elephant trainer Rory Hensmann and his team at the organisation Elephants for Africa Forever, these extensively trained elephants and their grooms offer the chance of a lifetime and with long- lasting memories guaranteed.
